The 2016 Yankees finished the season with a record of 84-78, which was good enough for 4th in the Al East and missed the playoffs by 5 games. Prior to the 2016 season, the Yankees acquired Aroldis Chapman fro the Reds and Starlin Castro from the Cubs for Adam Warren and promising young 1B Greg Bird injured his shoulder and it was announced he would miss the entire season. The 2016 season saw the departures of long time Yankees such as Mark Teixeria (who retired after the season) and A-Rod (who was released mid way through the season). [IMG]
The Yankees entered the season with the best 7th, 8th, and 9th inning combos in the league and expected that to carry them, which it didn't. After an underwhelming first half of the season for the Yanks, GM Brian Cashman had a decision to make about the team and its future. For the first time in awhile, Cashman and the Yankees became sellers at the Trade Deadline. Yankees traded OF/DH Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers for prospects SP Dillon Tate, P Erik Swanson, and P Nick Green. Yankees traded Star CP Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for Cubs top prospect 2B/SS Gleyber Torres (MLB's #17 Prospect, Youngest player ever to win AFL MVP at 19), OF Billy McKinney, OF Rashad Crawford, and P Adam Warren. Lastly, the Yanks traded Star RP Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians for top prospect, OF Clint Frazier (MLB's #15 Prospect), LHP Justus Sheffield, and RHPers Ben Heller and J.P. Feyereisen. In just a span of a few days, the Yanks prospect pool became one of the best in the league. Once ARod was released, it opened a roster spot for the Yanks, it left space for them to call up Rookie Phenom Catcher Gary Sanchez from AAA. Sanchez was the #1 ranked catching prospect in all of baseball and he certainly lived up to his expectations last season. In just 53 games, Sanchez racked up 20HR, 42RBIs, 60Hits, .299 BA, a .376OBP, 3.0 WAR, FLD% of .994, and Finished 2nd in ROY voting. [IMG]

Prior to the Winter Meetings, the Yankees traded C Brian McCann to the Astros for Prospects Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman and the Yankees will retain $11 in salary over the final 2 years of McCann's deal. At the 2016 Winter Meetings, the Yanks made some pretty good moves. They signed OF/DH Matt Holliday to a 1yr, $13M deal to fill the hole that was left by Beltran/Tex. And they resigned Star CP Aroldis Chapman to a record, 5yr $86M contract.

    My Take on the Season:
The beginning absolutely sucked, but after Cashman made up his mind and decided to sell, it became a lot more enjoyable. Watching guys like Sanchez tear it up in the show for the final 2 months of the season was great and they seemed to get better once they sold and got rid of ARod. Very excited for next year and the future of this team.
