What should we do in free agency? Any signings or Trades?
First off, pay more attention to the scouting. If you can pay more attention to the places you scout you can actually pick up info on the top 5 picks (instead of just going to the OHL wihtout knowing who's in it), and towards the end of the year you can start focusing on your draft range. That way, you'll know more about your potential draft picks.
Also, whether you make a big splash in free agency depends on if you're in win-now mode. If you are, Andersen would be a good bet to get, and then trade Lehner away for picks and have Scrivens as insurance if Freddy starts to play badly. Another person to go for is Kyle Okposo. He wants a bit of a money but IMO Stone is more of a 3rd line guy (I don't think he'll grow and 84 isn't really great for a PWF on the second line) and Okposo can give you some great 2nd line depth who can come up and play 1st line as well. He'll also make Zibenejad play better and might help him to grow (4 green can become 88 but he isn't doing much in that area). He's younger too, but still is old enough to provide some veteran experience. Don't go for Kesler, though. He starts to drop at 33-34 years old.
Two more things: can you show us the top 5 picks as well? I know you don't want all the people who are saying "TRADE FOR THE TOP PICK!" but I'm curious to see what you made Auston Matthews. And additionally, sign Mackenzie Savard. He's 19, so he possibly can play in the juniors next year. From past experiences players don't grow if you leave them unsigned. (ex. Jesse Mills + Ryan Pilon)
I think Okposo would be a good option. He would provide tremendous 2nd line depth and could easily play on the 1st line in case of injury or or if one of Hall or Ryan struggled. He could really help mentor Hoffman and Zibanejad. Stone could play 3rd line for the time being as he has yet to see any real improvement and would be good on the 3rd line as he is both solid defensively and good physically.
Also, if you're in full win-now mode and are tired of waiting for Lehner to grow into a legit, top-flight starter, you could sign Andersen who would increase your Stanley Cup chances ten-fold. If you were to sign either of the aforementioned two players, Abdelkader would be a good add-in. If you don't want Andersen or Okposo you could just sign Abdelkader and a bunch of depth players like Clitsome, Booth and Thompson.
In my opinion you should just sign some depth players and leave the top 6 as they are
If you want to make your offence better, sign Kesler or Okposo. That will mean that you will have to send down/trade Hoffman or Stone(IMO choose Hoff). That will also add scoring to your bottom six, also sign Bergenheim because he's good defensively and can put up points on the tried line. Finally, don't trade any more of your 2nd and 3rd round picks. Unless you need to. They can be 4 star players if you scout properly and not just choose somewhere. Example: your 6th overall in the league in points, scout for players that are 1st/2nd round NOT top 10. Sorry for long comment
Johnny I think it's totally possible to get anderson if you give anderson the 10 mil you should be able to sang him and then trade Lehner for some draft picks or young prospects or if you don't want to get Anderson you could get Spaling and Spurgeon to play with Wiercicoh who you should put on the second D line because Ceci grew up to an 86 and I think he should get some more ice time
Signing Anderson might be good because he's a great starter. Also Okposo might not be bad either, but your already so low on cap you wouldn't be able to. However you could barely get Abdelkader and Anderson if you trade away a player with a little bit of cap. It would be nice to get Okposo though.
Signing Kesler would would be ideal. you would then have two great centres, you literally just said that is what you need to win in the playoffs. Kesler also only wants 6 million, you could easily get him and a depth forward/defensman. Signing Anderson is unrealistic because you just drafted a goalie and he wants way too much.
Ablekader is a must. Great bottom six forward with good defense stats. If ur in a win now, go Okposo. Steep contract but worth it for a young guy who gets up to 89-90. If not, then improve the bottom six and get another top 6 defensemen. Next vid, can u check next potential for the top guys so we can see what you put for Auston Matthews.
Definitely go for Frederik Andersen. Use Lehner as trade bait and then your goalie situation will be in very good shape with Savard waiting in the wings. Keep your top 6 the same for next year, and go for a few depth players in free agency. You could use an ~83 overall defenseman, and maybe a couple ~83 overall wingers.
If you're in win-now mode i'd say sign anderson, then trade lehner. If you signed anderson you'd still have a good 2 million left, so you can also pick up a depth player for the bottom 6.
Good job on trading Pageau
- Please sign Frederik Andersen
Great young goalie, fits your team best
- get a good 3rd pair defenseman. Your defense might be weak
-improve your bottom 6, your top 6 is amazing and their getting the job done.
Focus on getting goalies and improving your defense.
If you don't want to shake up the top 6, you might be able to crank up the years to lower the AAV and get Andersen and Abdelkader. This wouldn't allow for a defensive signing but bottom pairing D-men are a dime a dozen.
A lot of analysts are suggesting Okposo but if you want to hedge your bets on Stone and Hoffman, Ryan Kesler is the answer. Kesler is 400K cheaper than Okposo and covers for the defensive liability that Phillips' replacement will probably be.
Leave your top 6 as they are for one more year. If Hoff and Stone still don't show any growth, look at trading them before the trade deadline. As for free agency, Abdelkader is a great bottom 6 player and would be a perfect player alongside Wingels and Lazar (should you throw him on the 3rd line) to help his growth. Gunnarrson would be a great replacement for Phillips, and you should still have enough cap space to sign a depth forward or two.
I absolutetly agree with pretty much everything you've said there, and the drafting thing is also important, however Hammond was dealt away in the Hall deal...just thought i'd correct you there
I think it's a smart idea to pick up okposo because a snp ply pwf line would look really nice and he's in his prime and u can move down stone to the third line cause he's a pwf forward which would give him good defensive stats
Sign Conacher and Fleischman and maybe Ballard. Keith Ballard would be a cheap replacement for Phillips if he drops during the season and then call it a good free agency for your team. If you want to make a big splash then sign Okposo but don't sign Kesler, you have too many centers as it is. Anderson would be sweet to get but why give up on Lehner so soon? To me it only makes sense for your team to only acquire bottom six forwards and a Phillips replacement if he drops.
whoops, I totally forgot about that. lol
Scrivens then. Actually that works out better because Scrivens is a backup but he is still a solid goalie.
Definitely try to sign Andersen, he will make a huge difference on the roster and could definitely help in future playoff situations. Guys like Kesler and Okposo would be a bad decision because if you play them, top 6 spots would be very different. Someone like Letestu, Stoll, or Fleischmann would be great pickups for the team as well but then the salary cap could become an issue. I trust you to make the right decision Mr Superbman.
